On August 6, 1945, a US B-29 dropped a bomb nicknamed “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, instantly killing an estimated 130,000 people and destroying 70% of the buildings. Three days later, a second bomb was detonated in Nagasaki, resulting in another 70,000 deaths. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945.
However, Japan has risen from the ashes and devoted itself to developing nuclear technology for peace. Today, about 30% of its electrical power comes from nuclear power. Japan even shares its technology with China despite China having nuclear weapons. The nuclear research institute where I worked sent delegations to Japan yearly. Japan has indeed changed from an aggressive country to a peace-loving nation.
So, Nuclear for peace is achievable, yet we are still facing the fear of nuclear war due to ongoing atomic weapon races and nuclear proliferation. The key to preventing another nuclear tragedy like Hiroshima lies in our hands through global cooperation and a united front against the misuse of nuclear technology.
